Our experience has been that the strongest motivation toward self-support and independence for persons with developmental disabilities and mental illness is paid work experience.
Work Center and Supported Employment Programs Offered
To offer this experience, North Star Industries operates two work center programs in Northern and Southern Franklin County, where program participants work with staff to identify and build practical job skills. Under supervision of North Star Industries staff, participants are paid to provide a wide variety of basic services and products to area businesses and individuals. North Star Industries also operates the Clean Sweep Janitorial Services, Adirondack Wood Furnishings and Adirondack Micrographics programs in Malone, both of which offer vocational and emotional supports to those diagnosed with mental illnesses. In Saranac Lake, NSI operates a large greenhouse/nursery complex called the HHOTT House offering training in horticultural and customer relations to our participants. For other participants, North Star Industries operates two Career Visions Employment Services offices in Northern and Southern Franklin County to provide job development, coaching and ongoing supports to help participants remain in community-based employment.
